Walmart is the largest buyer of container freight into the US. This means they have more leverage than anyone, if they wanted, to clean up the polluting shipping industry.
They have come up with a semi-decent plan to reduce their giant GHG emissions – Project Gigatonne.
However, it says nothing about how they will reduce their shipping-related GHG emissions.
Nor do they have any public plan to reduce all the other types of damage caused by their maritime supply chain – air pollution, illegal oily bilge dumping, violation of seafarers rights, whale strikes, underwater noise pollution, invasive species spread, or carcinogenic scrubber wastewater discharge.
For now, Walmart seems to think the oceans and climate are its personal waste dump. See the problem?
